Drawn to History: Teaching with Editorial Cartoons Workshop

The National WWII Museum invites history, civics, English/language arts, and art educators to join us for a free professional development workshop exploring how editorial cartoonists throughout history have captured perspectives on the events and issues of their time through humor, satire, symbolism, and artistic skill.

Participating teachers will explore the life and work of WWII cartoonist Bill Mauldin and tour the special exhibition Drawn to Combat: Bill Mauldin and the Art of War with members of the Museum’s curatorial team. Educators will also discover strategies for using and analyzing editorial cartoons, comics, and other visual media as primary sources in the classroom and participate in a hands-on cartooning workshop with a professional artist. Participants will leave with classroom-ready strategies, curricula, and Museum resources.

This daylong workshop is free of cost and will include coffee, lunch, and parking in the Museum’s garage. Participants will also have complimentary admission to the Museum following the workshop.
