UNO PIES Coastal Education Program offers class field trips to introduce students to the coastal environment through field experiences, hands-on STEM activities, and project-based learning. Most field experiences take place at UNO’s Coastal Education and Research Facility located in eastern New Orleans at Chef Menteur Pass, where students can experience canoeing in the brackish marsh and learn first hand about the coast. We also partner with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to offer programs in nearby Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge. Teachers can participate in professional development workshops focused on using the local environment to develop science lessons based on current coastal research.
