Description
October is Louisiana Folklife Month and International Creole Heritage Month! Come celebrate our 3rd Annual Family Folklife Day with us. What are some traditions, songs, foods, games you have in your family? How do you do things the same, or uniquely from others in your community? How can we be intentional about the traditions you continue, reclaim, or start new with your family and friends? On Saturday, October 12th, share your experiences with us and learn about some of the diverse representations of culture that make up our communities in New Orleans. The day will be filled with demonstrations, performances, storytelling, community interviews, short film screenings and interactive activities featuring wonderful local collaborators and community partners such as Grayhawk Perkins, Spy Boy Walter, VIET, Be Loud Studios, NOVAC, Little Stompers, and more.
9:30-3:00 - VIET presents: Vietnamese “Family Table” and Cuisine Sampling in the Courtyard
9:30-1:30 - Interactive Sewing & Beading Workshop with Spy Boy Walter in our Make Your Mark Gallery
10:00-12:00 - Be Loud Studios Podcast Table & Community Interviews in collab with NOVAC Youth Videographers in the Studio and around the Museum
10:30 - A Tale of Two Boots: Italy to Louisiana - Italian Folk Music Exploration in our Big Backyard by the Lagoon
11:00 & 1:00 - Storytime with Ms. Cherlyn in Talk & Play
11:30 & 1:30 - Storytelling with Grayhawk Perkins in Talk & Play
12:30-3:30 - NOVAC Stop Motion Animation Station in Studio in the Park
12:30-1:30 - Creole & Cajun Food Demo with Jambalaya and Trinity Choppin' in the Edible Garden
2:30-3:15 - Little Stompers Roots of New Orleans Music Interactive Performance in the Courtyard
Also featuring other explorations around the museum like a Louisiana Folklife Sensory Exploration in Play with Me, Steward's Ship and Family Fishing Stories in our Big Backyard, Palmetto Weaving in the Toddler Landscape, Community Wheel of the Year in the Atrium, NOVAC short film screenings, and Louisiana French and Creole Language table in the Atrium. LCM’s expansive indoor/outdoor campus is the epicenter of LCM’s programs, which are designed for children from birth through third grade who have various learning styles and abilities. Annually, LCM welcomes approximately 190,000 local and out-of-town visitors and engages approximately 12,000 New Orleans area youth and adults through its community outreach programs.
